Armed-ed.com has developed a method of Dealing with Math. There are a few questions you should ask yourself about Math. When was the last time you had Math? How long ago was it? How well did you do in it? Have you ever taken any college level Math? This section was designed to help you deal with college level Math.
Forget What you Know:
The majority of people hate Math. Learning math is different than learning History, Literature or English. When approaching Math remember this key fact.
Success Tip
Learning Math is a process. In fact, think of Math as process problem solving. The key to being successful is knowing the process that the particular problem entails. Simply put, if you know the steps of the process, you can solve the problem. If you don’t know the process, miss a step in the process, or have the incorrect process order, you will not solve the problem correctly. Concentrate on learning which process steps go with what problems.
Ask, Ask, Ask:
If you’re taking an online class, and you have trouble with a math problem, or concept…Ask.
Success Tip
Ask for help. This can’t be overstated. Your online class has an instructor. Contact the instructor immediately at the first sign of confusion. Math progresses. If you don’t understand current processes, it will be very difficult to understand future processes and concepts. Concepts are interconnected. Ask questions until you understand it.
Tutor:
Consider a tutor for Math classes.
Success Tip
A tutor could be an excellent way to get you over math. If you’ve contacted your instructor and you still don’t get the concept, you may need a tutor. Ask your education office if tutors are available. Sometimes your online school will have a math support team that can help.
College Level Testing:
Consider “testing” out math classes with CLEP or DSST.
Success Tip
This is another good way to get math out of the way. Both CLEP and DSST offer college level math testing. Contact your military friendly online school to see what the steps are.
Offline Math classes:
If all else fails, consider taking your Math class at a local university.
Success Tip
This should be your very last resort, but some people just need that in class support for certain subjects. If this is what you need for Math, do it. Contact your online school to make sure that the offline math class you’re taking will transfer into your online school. And that it satisfies the Math requirement.
Don’t Give In:
Math classes can be difficult, and almost every degree requires at least one math class. In order to get through, and earn a degree, you have to get through math.
Success Tip
Try these steps, if you need to take the class offline, by all means make it happen. Remember Math is a difficult subject for almost everyone. A letter grade of “C” is passing (undergraduate) and will keep you in the military’s good graces (tuition assistance eligibility) and keep you on track towards your ultimate goal.
Using these factors, we are confident that you have a better chance at success. Nobody ever said that earning your degree would be easy, but it’s definitely worth it.
Work hard, study hard and believe in yourself, you can do it.
